Gustavus Adolphus College’s nationally ranked forensics team opened its 2009-10 tournament schedule with a strong showing at the first and second Mid-American Forensics League (MAFL) tournaments on Sept. 26-27 in Illinois.
Gustavus placed third in the team sweepstakes behind Bradley University and Illinois State University at the first MAFL tournament at Harper College in Palatine, Ill., on Saturday, Sept. 26. Four Gustavus students took home first place trophies including Mary Cunningham in Extemporaneous Speaking, Phil Helt in Communication Analysis, Christopher Moua in Persuasion, and Chloe Radcliffe in Prose.
Christopher Hunt placed second in Program Oral Interpretation, sixth in Poetry, and third in Dramatic Duo along with Sam Hemmerich. Hemmerich also earned a fourth place finish in Drama.
Other notable performances included Radcliffe’s second place finish in Drama, Cunningham’s sixth place finish in Communication Analysis, and Allegra Birdseye’s sixth place finish in Extemporaneous Speaking.
The team then placed fourth in the team sweepstakes at the second MAFL tournament at North Central College in Naperville, Ill., on Sunday, Sept. 27.
Hunt and Moua both garnered first place trophies in Program Oral Interpretation and Persuasion respectively. Radcliffe took home three second place trophies in Communication Analysis, Drama, and Prose. Other results included Cunningham’s sixth place finish in Persuasion, Hunt and Hermmerich’s third place finish in Dramatic Duo, and Hemmerich’s sixth place finish in Prose.
