Gustavus Employee Atop Standings at Olympic Curling Trials Posted on February 21st, 2009 by

Kevin Birr, assistant catering manager for the Gustavus Adolphus College dining service, is currently participating in the United States Olympic Curling Trials in Broomfield, Colo. Birr and his teammates, brother Todd Birr, Paul Pustovar, and Greg Wilson are currently tied atop the standings after three days of competition with a 4-1 record.

The team, which is officially called the Todd Birr Rink due to Todd Birr’s position as “skip” or captain, defeated the Greg Romaniuk Rink of Seattle, Wash., 8-5 in a Monday afternoon match to improve to 4-0 at the Trials. The team then suffered its only loss in a Monday night match to the Christopher Plys Rink of Duluth, Minn., by a score of 7-5.

In earlier action on Sunday, Feb. 23, the Todd Birr Rink defeated the John Shuster Rink of Duluth, Minn., 5-3 and the Kevin Deeren Rink of Chicago, Ill., 8-6. Birr’s team opened the trials on Saturday, Feb. 21 with an 8-6 victory over the Tyler George Rink of Duluth, Minn.

Round robin matches continue through Thursday, Feb. 26. The top four teams will then advance to the playoff round which will take place Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 28. You can follow the results of the Olympic Trials by going online to curlingrocks.net .
