Longtime basketball and golf coach at Gustavus Adolphus College, Whitey Skoog, will have his jersey retired by the University of Minnesota at halftime of the Gophers’ game against Northwestern on Feb. 22.

Skoog played for the Gophers from 1948-51 and is best known as one of the foremost pioneers of the jump shot. Skoog was a two-time All-American and three-time All-Big Ten selection for the Gophers. He was the 10th pick in the 1951 NBA draft and played six seasons for the Minneapolis Lakers.

Skoog coached the men’s basketball team at Gustavus from 1957-81. He recorded 289 victories and MIAC championships during the 1967-68 and 1974-75 seasons. As the men’s golf coach, Skoog led the Gusties to 17 conference titles, including 13 straight from 1981-94. He was the Division III men’s golf coach of the year in 1991.
