Homecoming and Family Weekend 2008 at Gustavus Adolphus College is set for Oct. 3-5 and will include the inauguration of President Jack R. Ohle as well as many traditional events such as alumni reunions, a homecoming parade, music concerts, workshop sessions, athletic events, and much more.

Following is a list of the weekend events, which are open to the public without charge except where indicated.

Friday, Oct. 3

  • Parents are invited to visit classes
  • 3:30 p.m. — Celebrate Gustavus: Inauguration of President Jack R. Ohle, Christ Chapel
  • 5:00 p.m. — Inaugural Reception, Eckman Mall
  • 9-11 p.m. — Homecoming Bonfire, fire pit in front of Sorenson, Gibbs, and North Halls

Saturday, Oct. 4

  • 9 a.m. — 5K Fun Run from the Three Flags ($5, payable onsite, includes t-shirt)
  • 9 a.m. — Seminar: “2008 Presidential Election,” political science professor Chris Gilbert, Heritage Banquet Room, C. Charles Jackson Campus Center
  • 9 a.m. — Granlund Sculpture Tour, meet at Christ Chapel
  • 9 a.m. — Seminar: “Planning Ahead to Study Abroad,” St. Peter Banquet Room
  • 9 a.m. — City tour and coffee shop stop, meet at Three Flags for a guided tour of St. Peter
  • 10 a.m. — Homecoming Worship: “Remembering and Celebrating,” Christ Chapel
  • 10:30 a.m. — Celebrate Gustavus: Inaugural Tree Dedication and Reception, Linnaeus Arboretum
  • 10:30 a.m. — Seminar: “History of Gustavus and Building a Greater Gustavus Tornado Video,” Heritage Banquet Room, C. Charles Jackson Campus Center
  • 10:30 a.m. — Seminar: “Parenting Successful College Students,” St. Peter Room, C. Charles Jackson Campus Center
  • 10:30 a.m. — Seminar: “Paying for College,” Presidents Dining Room, C. Charles Jackson Campus Center
  • 11 a.m. — Homecoming Parade, Campus Drive from Pittman Hall to Norelius Hall
  • 11 a.m. — 1 p.m. — Homecoming Carnival Lunch, Evelyn Young Dining Room (payable onsite)
  • 1 p.m. — Women’s soccer game vs. Hamline University, Gustavus Soccer Field
  • 1:30 p.m. — Discover Linnaeus Arboretum, Melva Lind Interpretive Center
  • 1:30 p.m. — Homecoming Football Game vs. University of St. Thomas, Hollingsworth Field ($5/ticket or Gustavus I.D. required)
  • 4-7 p.m. — Celebrate Gustavus: Oktoberfest, Lund Forum ($7 per person, payable onsite)
  • 7:30 p.m. — Neal Hagberg ’81 and Leandra Peak ’83 Concert, Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall (ticket required, available at information desk and at the door if tickets remain)
  • 8 p.m. — Mission Improvable improv and sketch comedy group, Evelyn Young Dining Room, C. Charles Jackson Campus Center

Sunday, Oct. 5

  • 10 a.m. — Holy Communion Worship Service, with the Choir of Christ Chapel, the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra, and Chapel Ringers, Christ Chapel
  • 11 a.m. — Jazz Brunch, featuring the Gustavus jazz ensembles, Evelyn Young Dining Room (paid a la carte)
  • 1 p.m. — Men’s soccer game vs. Grinnell College, Gustavus Soccer Field
  • 1:30 p.m. — Family Weekend Concert featuring the Gustavus Choir, Gustavus Symphony Orchestra, Gustavus Wind Orchestra, Lucia Singers, and Vasa Wind Orchestra, Christ Chapel
  • 4:30 p.m. — Diversity Center Banquet, Campus Center Banquet Rooms (advance RSVP required)

In addition to the activities and events scheduled during the weekend, many homecoming celebratory activities will take place the week prior to Homecoming and Family Weekend. The 2008 Homecoming Medallion Hunt will take place from Monday, Sept. 29 to Friday, Oct. 3 with new clues posted each morning at 8 a.m. in front of the Student Activities Information Desk. A Homecoming Variety Show will take place from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 in the Evelyn Young Dining Room. The variety show will include the coronation of the Homecoming king and queen.

Eight classes will celebrate class reunions during the course of the weekend including the class of 1968 which will celebrate its 40th reunion.
