A vigil and massive flag display is planned for Thursday, Sept. 11 as the Gustavus Adolphus College and St. Peter communities will honor the victims of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
The program will start on Eckman Mall at Gustavus at 7:30 p.m. with a procession to Minnesota Square Park in St. Peter where the vigil will take place. Participants will place 2,977 American flags in the ground, one for each individual who passed away in the attack.
The Gustavus College Republicans and Young America’s Foundation are co-sponsors of the event which is part of the 9/11: Never Forget Project.
“We are proud to lead the effort to remember those lost on that day,” said senior Carla Shutrop, president of the Gustavus College Republicans. “While it was seven years ago, the memory should never fade from our nation. We call on all individuals within the campus community and the community at large to participate.”
The 9/11: Never Forget Project is part of a nationwide program on college and university campuses. This year, more than 180 campuses are participating and this program is the first and largest nationwide campus initiative to honor the victims of 9/11.
