Tim Wise will speak at Gustavus during Diversity Week on Thursday, March 13
Gustavus Adolphus College will celebrate Diversity Week from Monday, March 10 to Saturday, March 15. The theme for this year’s week of events is “Making Mosaics: Valuing Diversity on the Hill.”
The schedule of events is as follows:
Monday, March 10: Trivia night with the Peer Assistants and Gustie Greeters will take place from 7-9 p.m. in the Courtyard Café, located on the lower level of the C. Charles Jackson Campus Center.
Tuesday, March 11: The movie “Kite Runner” will be shown at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. in the Three Crowns Banquet Room. This event is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board (CAB), Crossroads, and Pan-Afrikan Student Organization.
Wednesday, March 12: The documentary “Bangalamerica,” produced by Gustavus students Matt Fillmore and Siddarth Selvaraj, will be shown at 6 p.m. in Wallenberg Auditorium, located in the Alfred Nobel Hall of Science. The film explores the consequences of a relentless series of American influences on the lifestyle, culture, and identity of the inhabitants of Bangalore City. A roundtable discussion with the College Democrats and the College Republicans will follow.
Thursday, March 13: The “I Am…We Are” theatre company will perform at 6:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall, located in the O.J. Johnson Student Union. The performance will precede the appearance of speaker Tim Wise, who will present a speech titled, “The Myth of a Post-Racial America: Confronting Racism and White Denial in the Age of Obama.” Wise is among the most prominent anti-racist writers and activists in the country and has spoken in 48 states, and on over 400 college campuses. He is the author of “White Like Me: Reflection on Race from a Privileged Son,” and “Affirmative Action: Racial Preference in Black and White.” This event is sponsored by the Diversity Center.
Friday, March 14: The documentary “For the Bible Tells Me So,” will be shown at 7 p.m. in Alumni Hall and 10 p.m. in Wallenberg Auditorium. The 7 p.m. showing will be followed by an educational panel that will include Phil and Randi Reitan, who are featured in the movie. The film explores the intersections between Christianity and homosexuality through the stories of five Christian families who have gay children. This event is sponsored by Queers and Allies, Human Rights Campaign, CAB, the Chaplains’ Office, and the Diversity Center.
Saturday, March 15: Doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals from the non-profit organization Africa Partners Medical will speak at 12 p.m. in Linner Lounge, located in the O.J. Johnson Student Union. The documentary “For the Bible Tells Me So,” will be shown at 7 and 10 p.m. in Wallenberg Auditorium.
