Gustavus to Offer Summer Speech Institute Posted on May 17th, 2007 by

Gustavus Adolphus College and its nationally recognized speech team have announced they will offer their first Summer Speech Institute for high school students August 5-10.

The six day, five night intensive camp will afford students the opportunity to work with Gustavus coaches, high school coaches and nationally recognized collegiate competitors.

While event preparation will be stressed, campers will learn vocal warm-ups, tournament etiquette, and the confidence necessary to compete at the highest level.

Events covered at the camp will include Prose, Humorous, Dramatic Duo, Drama, Poetry, Storytelling, Extemporaneous Reading, Oratory, Informative, Great Speeches, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Impromptu Speaking.

The camp will offer a carefully supervised introduction to college life as students will live in college residence halls, eat in the campus-dining center, and attend sessions in college classrooms. Students will utilize the Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library, an excellent resource for researching public address speeches and interpretation events.

Registration costs are $390 before June 15 or $425 before July 1. Included in the fee are three meals a day, housing at the College, photocopying costs, camp mementoes, a t-shirt, and evening activities. At the conclusion of the camp there will be a tournament culminating in a banquet for parents to attend.

The Gustavus forensics team won numerous individual and team awards this year including a top 20 finish at the 2007 American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament.
