Gustavus Adolphus College senior Andrew Howard will present a paper, titled “The Runner and the Iliad” April 14 at the 103rd annual meeting of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS).

CAMWS is the professional association of classics teachers from thirty states and much of Canada. Xavier University is hosting this year’s four-day meeting held April 11-14 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Howard — a rare undergraduate presenter at the CAMWS annual meeting — will examine how in the Iliad, Homer utilizes such forces to explain the physiological changes that accompany running and by that, create a plausible explanation for the time and culture in which he was writing.

“It’s common for professors to present papers at the annual meeting, but it is very unusual for a student to have a paper accepted,” Gustavus Professor of Classics William Freiert said. “It’s a tremendous honor for Andrew.”

Howard is a classics and history major from Rochester, Minn., who spent a semester studying at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome. Howard is a member of both the Gustavus cross country and swimming and diving teams. He also serves as a tutor for students studying Greek and Latin and is planning on attending graduate school at the University of Texas for classics.
