Following the success of its inaugural showcase concert in the Twin Cities last spring, the Gustavus Adolphus College Department of Music is taking its 2006 Music Showcase to Orchestra Hall at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 12.

The showcase will feature the College’s three premier international-touring ensembles rooted in more than 125 years of experience—the Gustavus Choir, the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra, and the Gustavus Wind Orchestra. Under the direction of Gregory Aune, Warren Friesen, and Douglas Nimmo, these ensembles will each perform multiple pieces including commissioned works for the symphony orchestra and choir.

The symphony orchestra will premiere a commissioned work by Michele Gillman titled “Nemesis.” The group will also perform a movement from Steve Heitzeg’s “Symphony to a Prairie Farm.” The choir will perform Stephen Paulus’ “I Will Be With You,” a work commissioned for the Gustavus Choir by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in memory of Gustavus graduate Courtney Walker who worked as a development officer for the Kennedy Center and sang with the Gustavus Choir from 2000 to 2002. The wind orchestra will present “A Hymn for the Lost and the Living” by composer Eric Ewazen which was written in honor of all who were lost and all who suffered as a result of September 11. This piece had a “powerful effect” on audiences during the group’s January tour of Eastern Europe.

Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for students 18 and under. Call the Orchestra Hall box office at 612/371-5656 or 800/292-4141 for ticket information and reservations. Handling fees may apply.
