Holiday Traditions at Gustavus Adolphus College Posted on November 25th, 2003 by

Gustavus Adolphus College is in the midst of celebrating two beloved holiday traditions — Christmas is Christ Chapel and the Festival of Saint Lucia.

“Some Children See Him” is the theme of this year’s Christmas in Christ Chapel, which will be held Dec. 5-7. A tradition at Gustavus since 1973, Christmas is Christ Chapel is known for its combination of music, scripture, and pageantry. This year’s service will include compositions from around the world as well as familiar carols, sung and played by several of the college’s choral and instrumental ensembles. Hundreds of hours of preparation are put into Christmas in Christ Chapel, which is a collaborative effort between the Office of the Chaplains, the Department of Music, and other college departments.

The 62nd annual Festival of Saint Lucia will occur Thursday, Dec. 11. This celebration at Gustavus will include early morning caroling by Saint Lucia and her court (sophomore women selected by members of their class), a holiday bake sale, a chapel service, a holiday sale in the college’s bookstore, and a luncheon. This year’s Saint Lucia luncheon will feature musical entertainment by Minnesota’s premiere jazz pianist, George Maurer.

Tickets are sold out for Christmas in Christ Chapel and the Saint Lucia Luncheon. For more information, contact the Gustavus Office of Marketing and Public Relations at (507) 933-7520.
