Rain forced Gustavus Adolphus College commencement exercises indoors on Sunday, June 1, but that didn’t dampen the mood on campus as 553 seniors received their degrees inside Lund Arena.

Associate Professor and Chair of the Classics Department at Gustavus Adolphus College Matt Panciera, received the 2014 Edgar M. Carlson Award for Distinguished Teaching during the College’s commencement exercises on Sunday, June 1. Panciera was presented the award by the 2013 recipient, Associate Professor of English Rebecca Fremo.

Due to a strong chance of rain and thunderstorms this afternoon, commencement exercises for the class of 2014 have been moved indoors to Lund Arena. Attendees will need a ticket and doors will open at 12:30 p.m. Overflow seating will be available so attendees without a ticket can watch the live stream of the ceremony.

At 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1, the class of 2014 will receive their bachelor of arts degrees from Gustavus Adolphus College during commencement exercises at Hollingsworth Field. Brandon Dean, Assistant Professor of Music and Conductor of the Choir of Christ Chapel and Lucia Singers at Gustavus Adolphus College, received the 2014 Swenson-Bunn Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence at the College’s Honors Day convocation on Saturday, May 3. The award, which is nominated and selected by students, has been presented annually since 1990.

Jon Gutierrez ’82 is executive director of and the driving force behind Stillwater’s St. Croix Preparatory Academy, one of the most successful charter schools in Minnesota. Gutierrez majored in accounting at Gustavus and came to education in a round-about way.
