Master Gardener to Speak at Gustavus

Carolyn Harstad, advanced master gardener and author, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 20 in the Melva Lind Interpretive Center at Gustavus Adolphus College.

In her new gardening book Got Shade? A Take it Easy Approach for Today’s Gardener (2003), Harstad recommends methods on how to grow an interesting, well-balanced, low-maintenance shade garden. Also author of Go Native! Gardening with Native Plants and Wildflowers (1986), Harstad is a member of the National Garden Writers Association and is a sought-after lecturer. Harstad is also a nature photographer, landscape design consultant, and a co-founder of the Indiana Native Plant and Wildflower Society and the Indianapolis Hosta Society. A strong advocate for the environment, Harstad was one of five Indiana women chosen to attend the National Wildlife Federation Leadership Conference for Women in Conservation in 2001 and 2002, and is writing a biography of environmentalist Richard Lieber.

Harstad’s two books are on sale at the Book Mark and will also be available for purchase and signing following the lecture.
