Darfur Week to Raise Genocide Awareness

Gustavus Adolphus College will host a series of events and activities during the week of Monday, April 20 to raise awareness of genocide. The week is titled “Darfur Week: Protect, Prevent, Prosecute, Remember.”

Gustavus Adolphus College will host a series of events and activities during the week of Monday, April 20 to raise awareness of genocide. The week is titled “Darfur Week: Protect, Prevent, Prosecute, Remember.”

The week’s scheduled events will begin Monday, April 20 with Camp Darfur, a traveling refugee camp that highlights the history and consequences of genocide in the 20th and 21st centuries. The exhibit will be set up on Eckman Mall outside of the College’s C. Charles Jackson Campus Center.

Gabriel Stauring and Katie-Jay Scott, directors of Camp Darfur and the grassroots organization Stop Genocide Now, will speak throughout the day. Both Stauring and Scott have visited and worked at refugee camps on the border of Sudan and Chad.

The week’s events will conclude Sunday, April 26 when genocide activists will gather at the Minnesota State Capitol Mall for “Day for Darfur: The Faces of Genocide.” The event will run from 1 to 3 p.m. and will feature music, speakers, and interactive activities.

The scheduled events for the entire week are as follows:

  • Monday, April 20 / Screening of the documentary “Genocide Again: Darfur” / Anderson Social Science Center / 6:30 — 8 p.m.
  • Tuesday, April 21 / Interactive tabling / C. Charles Jackson Campus Center
  • Wednesday, April 22 / Screening of the documentary “Sand and Sorrow” / St. Peter Room / 6:30 — 9:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, April 23 / All-day fast
  • Friday, April 24 / Petitions to President Obama, Sen. Klobuchar, and Rep. Walz
  • Sunday, April 26 / Day for Darfur: The Faces of Genocide / State Capitol / 1-3 p.m.

April is Genocide Prevention Month. People across the country will come together at different events to call on the international community to take meaningful actions when early warning indicators signal possible onset of mass-scale atrocity crimes, and to mobilize resources to avert or halt such ongoing crises and protect civilians from mass atrocity crimes.

Darfur Week is being co-sponsored by the Gustavus chapter of STAND, the student-led division of the Genocide Intervention Network, as well as the Gustavus Community Service Center, the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the University of Minnesota, the Genocide Intervention Network-Minnesota, and Campus Progress.
