Members of the nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College forensics team will perform publicly on Thursday, May 15 at this year’s Speech Showcase. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Courtyard Café, located on the lower level of the C. Charles Jackson Campus Center.
The Speech Showcase will conclude a highly successful season for the Gustavus forensics team. In February, the team placed first out of nine schools to win the Minnesota Collegiate Forensics Association State Championship. In April, the team earned a top 20 national ranking for the second consecutive year by placing 20th at the American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament.
Later in April, sophomores Emma Moreau and Mary Cunningham represented Minnesota and Gustavus at the Interstate Oratorical Association National Contest. Moreau became the first Gustavus student since 1974 to advance to the final round — placing fourth overall with an oration advocating for sodium regulation. Cunningham advanced to the semifinal round, making Gustavus the only school to advance two students to the semifinal round.
The Gustavus forensics program will offer its second annual Summer Speech Institute (SSI) for high school students this summer, Aug. 3-9. The SSI is led by the director of the Gustavus forensics program, Kristofer Kracht. For information about this summer’s SSI, go online to gustavus.edu/academics/speech-comm/forensics/camp/.
