Helps will host an A.P. Physics Facebook Live coaching session on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. central time.

Are you a high school student taking Advanced Placement Physics?

Gustavus Adolphus College alumnus Justin Helps ’11 will be hosting a Facebook Live session on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. central time to discuss the skills necessary to succeed in A.P. Physics. The live coaching session will include tips and strategies for success as well as a question-and-answer period.

Helps is hosting the event through his role at Khan Academy, a non-profit that empowers learners to study at their own pace in and outside the classroom. The group’s long-term mission is to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere.

After graduating from Gustavus as a physics major in 2011, Helps began a doctoral program in materials science at the University of Minnesota. During his time at the University of Minnesota, Helps began contributing to Khan Academy’s open-source platform and resources, which resulted in a job offer from the online education giant. After completing his master’s degree, Helps moved to California to begin in his role as a content specialist in math.

Now, three years later, he is Khan Academy’s Core Academic Content Manager and is responsible for working with specialists from different academic subjects to produce content for online learners. Helps trains and manages people and works to ensure that the content they deliver is relevant, accessible, and engaging for learners of all ages and backgrounds.

Helps encourages student interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to continually explore the “why” questions and to make sense of concepts in their own terms.

“In the Gustavus physics department, I got a lot of opportunities to be confused and learned to work through that confusion,” he said. “By studying physics, you develop flexible problem-solving skills that you can use in a variety of situations.”
