Gustavus Adolphus College is proud to welcome Taneem Husain to the community as the 2015-2016 Bruce Gray Postdoctoral Fellow. As the second Gray Fellow at Gustavus, Husain will teach one course per semester, continue research and writing, advise students, and engage in the day-to-day life of the College.
During her time on campus, Husain will be hosted by the interdisciplinary Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies program (GWSS), which focuses on gender and sexuality as cultural and social categories that organize and shape human experience.
Husain received her doctorate in women’s gender and sexuality studies from Ohio State University in May of 2015. She completed her dissertation on “Reimagining Race: Muslim Americans and the Politics of Inclusion” and has taught several courses related to the discipline. Her research and areas of specialization include ethnic and cultural studies, Muslims in the United States, and women in Islam. She also focuses on transnational feminism and queer studies. This fall she is teaching a course titled “Islam Gender and Sexuality in the U.S. Media” and will teach a spring semester seminar that will focus on identity traits such as sex, gender, race, and how they overlap with power and oppression.
Martin Lang, program director in gender, women, and sexuality studies, believes that Husain will further the GWSS mission of examining gender and sexuality from a multidisciplinary perspective. “All of Dr. Husain’s course offerings, as well as the research she will conduct during her time at Gustavus, will help GWSS to extend the interdisciplinary mission of our program and provide Gustavus students with top-notch learning opportunities,” he said.
The Bruce Gray Postdoctoral Fellowship is connected to the Consortium for Faculty Diversity, which is committed to increasing the diversity of students, faculty members, and curricular offerings at liberal arts colleges. The Gray Fellowship is named after Bruce Gray ’61, who spent 44 years as an administrator at the College in both the admission and advancement offices. It promotes interactive teaching, active learning and intellectual vitality for undergraduate students and faculty members, while supporting new scholars from under-represented ethnic and racial groups.
“GWSS is delighted to have such an exceptional colleague join us here at Gustavus,” Lang said.
