Gustavus Adolphus College will host Kristin Sundell for a lecture, “Breaking the Chains of International Debt: Justice and Jubilee,” which will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, in Nobel Hall’s Wallenberg Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

The issue of debt in poverty-stricken nations has rapidly risen to the forefront of international policy issues. Unlike individuals, it proves difficult for deeply indebted countries to manage their finances.

Where individuals are accorded the comforts of bankruptcy, countries are presented with more difficult alternatives. When countries fall into debt, their respective futures are determined by other governments and international financial institutions, which are directly responsible for both issuing debt and determining the levels of debt relief that will be issued.

Focusing on Haiti in particular, Sundell will discuss the international campaign to overcome debt as a means to ending poverty and injustice in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. As the outreach and congregations coordinator for the Jubilee USA Network, she has worked with an alliance of groups focused on the environment, human rights, labor, community, religion, and faith.

Sponsorship for Sundell’s upcoming visit is provided by Gustavus’ Religion Department, the Community Service Center, Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies, Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures, Peace Studies, and the Diversity Center.
