Distinguished author, economist, and social scientist Arthur C. Brooks will keynote the 2013 Lindau Symposium at Gustavus Adolphus College at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 18, in Alumni Hall. Brooks’ keynote lecture is titled “Gross National Happiness” and is free and open to the public.
Brooks is President of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), an American public policy think tank that “is a community of scholars and supporters committed to expanding liberty, increasing individual opportunity, and strengthening free enterprise.” Before coming to AEI, Brooks was the Louis A. Bantle Professor of Business and Government Policy at Syracuse University. He is the author of 10 books and hundreds of articles on topics ranging from the economics of the arts to military operations research.
Brooks’ most recent book is the New York Times bestseller The Road to Freedom: How to Win the Fight for Free Enterprise. In 2010, he published The Battle: How the Fight Between Free Enterprise and Big Government Will Shape America’s Future, which former Vice President Dick Cheney called “the playbook for the resurgence of the free enterprise movement.”
Before pursuing his work in public policy, Brooks spent 12 years as a professional French hornist with the City Orchestra of Barcelone and other ensembles. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Thomas Edison State College, a master’s degree in economics from Florida Atlantic University, and a Ph.D. in policy analysis and a master’s in philosophy from Pardee RAND Graduate School.
Gustavus established the Lindau Symposium in 2009 thanks to generous funding from the Phil ’58 and Nancy Lindau family. The goal of the symposium is to encourage dialogue among Gustavus faculty, staff, and students and to promote broad-based intellectual rigor and appreciation of all viewpoints in order to cultivate a campuswide respect for civil discourse for future generations. Past Lindau Symposium speakers include the Rev. Richard John Neuhaus (2009), Dinesh D’Souza (2011), and Charles Krauthammer (2012).
The Lindau Symposium was also established to honor the memory of Phil Lindau, who passed away in 2006. Phil devoted many years of his life to help ensure the future success and advancement of Gustavus. He served the College as a member of both the Alumni Association Board and the Board of Trustees, which he chaired from 1992 to 1995. Lindau also chaired the Building a Greater Gustavus Campaign following the 1998 tornado and was awarded the Greater Gustavus Award in 2003 for his commitment and generosity to the College.
