Three Gustavus Adolphus College students returned with honors from the 18th annual National Black Graduate Student Conference, “Positively Facing the Rising Sun,” held March 15-19 in Las Vegas, Nev. The conference attracted more than 250 attendees from 48 institutions in 41 states.
A small group of undergraduates participated in the conference, including three Gustavus students who won awards for their paper presentations.
Students honored at this conference include:
- Sophomore Mohamed Hussein of Minneapolis, Minn., who won first place with his paper, “New Immigrant Populations and the Challenges They Face: Somali Populations in Minneapolis.”
- Sophomore Amran Farah of Minneapolis, Minn., who won second place with her paper, “Consequences and Prevention of Malnutrition.”
- Junior Carla Smith of Minneapolis, Minn., who won third place with her paper, “The Effects of a Familiar or Novel Environment on Classroom Learning.”
