The Hillstrom Museum of Art at Gustavus Adolphus College will present its latest exhibition, Alumni Invitational Art Exhibition: Ars Longa, Academia Brevis, from Nov. 22, 2010 through Jan. 28, 2011. An opening reception will take place Monday, Nov. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m.
This exhibit will feature 63 recent artworks by past Gustavus studio art majors ranging from the class of 2009 back to the class of 1951 – the earliest year students could graduate with the major. All of the nearly 500 past studio art majors from the College were invited to participate. Many of the participants have continued to be active in art since leaving Gustavus.
The exhibition’s subtitle references the first lines of an aphorism by the Greek physician Hippocrates, Ars longa, vita brevis, which suggests that art endures even though life is brief. The exhibition’s variant, Ars Longa, Academia Brevis suggests that art endures even though one’s college career is brief.
Gustavus President Jack R. Ohle, Director of Alumni Relations Randall Stucky, and Professor of Art and Art History Bruce McClain will give brief remarks at the opening reception at 8 p.m.
As with all exhibitions and programs of the Hillstrom Museum of Art, this exhibition and its opening reception are free and open to the public. The Museum’s regular hours are weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and weekends, 1 to 5 p.m. Additional information can be found on the Museum’s website at gustavus.edu/finearts/hillstrom, including hours of closure during the College’s Thanksgiving and Holiday Breaks.
