Gustavus To Celebrate Student Accomplishments

The annual Honors Weekend slate of events will recognize the many successes of the 2020-2021 academic year.

In a year marked by new ways of teaching and learning, Gustavus Adolphus College students and faculty have found ways to innovate, connect, and achieve. The annual Honors Weekend events celebrate research, scholarship, and creative inquiry, recognize student achievements, and highlight the artistic works of Gustie creators.

Honors Weekend kicks off on Friday, April 30 with the on-campus Spring Science Research Symposium (open only to current students, faculty, and staff) from 2:30-4 p.m. From 4-6 p.m., the Celebration of Creative Inquiry features 27 student research projects that will be highlighted in a virtual poster presentation. Virtual attendees will be treated to projects from 13 different academic departments and have the opportunity to drop in and out of multiple sessions and engage in conversation with the student researchers.

On Saturday morning at 10 a.m., the virtual Honors Convocation service will celebrate students honorees for academic, fellowship, service, and leadership achievements. During the ceremony, Associate Professor of Biology Margaret Bloch Qazi, winner of the 2019 Edgar M. Carlson Award for Distinguished Teaching, will offer remarks, Provost and Dean of the College Brenda Kelly will announce the winner of the Faculty Scholarly Accomplishment Award, and Student Senate co-president Evelyn Doran ’21 will present the Swenson-Bunn Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence to a member of the faculty.

At 1:30 p.m. the virtual Senior Honors Recital will feature select student musicians. Saturday also marks the opening of 6 feet apART, the Senior Studio Art Majors Exhibition that will run through May 13 in the Hillstrom Museum of Art.

In addition to the annual Honors Weekend activities, several other fine arts performances will take place throughout the weekend, including the Gustavus Choir’s year-end virtual concert at 7 p.m. Friday. Saturday will also feature the Gustie Entrepreneur Cup.

Students, faculty, staff, parents, loved ones, alumni, and members of the greater Gustavus community are encouraged to take part in any or all of the virtual events linked above and share in the excitement using #GoGusties and #WhyGustavus on social media.
