President Rebecca M. Bergman announced Tuesday morning that Thomas J. Rooney, MBA, CTP, has accepted the position of Vice President for Finance and Treasurer at Gustavus Adolphus College. He will begin in the role on July 1, 2016.
Rooney comes to Gustavus after serving as the Chief Financial Officer, Vice President for Finance and Administration, and Treasurer of the Corporation at St. Catherine University since 2010. In his role at St. Catherine, he led a team of seven directors and 115 staff responsible for financial planning and analysis, accounting, treasury, legal affairs, human resources, purchasing, safety and security, facilities management, auxiliary services, and other administrative functions. Prior to his time at St. Catherine, Rooney worked in for-profit financial leadership roles in manufacturing, retail, and the financial service industries. He received both a BA in business and economics (1991) and a MBA in finance (1997) from the University of St. Thomas and has been a Certified Treasury Professional (CTP) since 2004.
“Tom brings both tremendous financial expertise and extensive management experience to Gustavus,” President Bergman said. “He is clearly a mission-driven person, and I believe he will be a great asset to the College as we prepare to implement a new 10-year strategic plan for the College.”
As the Vice President for Finance and Treasurer and the chief financial officer of the College, Rooney will work closely with President Bergman and her senior leadership team to advance Gustavus as one of the nation’s elite private liberal arts colleges. He will serve as an officer of the College and direct the College’s strategic financial planning, financial operations, human resources, campus facilities and physical plant, and auxiliary services.
Rooney looks forward to coming to Gustavus and the challenge of guiding the College in this crucial role. “Gustavus is an excellent school with a wonderful mission,” Rooney said. “I am very excited about the opportunity to be a part of that mission and to help enhance the College at this time in its history. I am also excited about joining the Saint Peter community while taking on this tremendous opportunity.”
Rooney will replace Kenneth Westphal, who is retiring after 28 years of service to the College as the Vice President for Finance and Treasurer.
