Junior Eric Hanson ’16 Wins Goldwater Scholarship
Gustavus Adolphus College junior mathematics major Eric Hanson ’16 is the recipient of a 2015 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, the premier undergraduate award for students pursuing careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. Hanson, an Apple Valley native, is the 20th Gustavus student since 1992 to receive a Goldwater Scholarship.
Jean-Paul Noel ’12 Receives NSF Graduate Research Fellowship
Gustavus Adolphus College alumnus Jean-Paul Noel ’12 is the recipient of a 2015 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF). Noel was one of 2,000 individuals awarded a fellowship this year out of more than 16,500 applicants. The fellowship will support Noel’s research through the Neuroscience Graduate Program at Vanderbilt University.
Forensics Team Places 11th at National Tournament
The Gustavus Adolphus College forensics team continued to assert itself as one of the country’s top collegiate programs when it placed 11th at the American Forensic Association’s National Individual Events Tournament (AFA-NIET) on Monday, April 6 in Portland, Oregon.
Geology Museum to Host Grand Reopening April 9
The Gustavus Adolphus College Geology Department will host a grand reopening of the College’s Chester Johnson Geology Museum from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 9. The museum is located on the first floor (Room 122) of the Alfred Nobel Hall of Science.
Student Created Exhibit Now on Display in Washington, D.C. Museum
A 12-panel exhibit commemorating the Dakota-U.S. War of 1862 created by Gustavus students in 2012 is now on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. The museum will have the exhibit on display through December 29, 2015.
Gustavus Announces MNCC Presidents’ Awards for Civic Engagement
Gustavus Adolphus College has announced that Nicole Ektnitphong ’15, Dr. Sarah Wolter ’02 and Dr. Paul Peterson ’94 are the College’s winners of the 2015 Minnesota Campus Compact (MNCC) Presidents’ Awards for Civic Engagement. These three awards provide an opportunity for member presidents and chancellors to give statewide recognition to effective leaders in the development of campus-community partnerships.
Rasmussen Wins Holmes National Poetry Prize
Gustavus Adolphus College alumnus and Visiting Professor of English Matt Rasmussen ’98 has been selected as the latest recipient of the Theodore H. Holmes and Bernice Holmes National Poetry Prize. The distinction is awarded by the Lewis Center for the Arts’ Program in Creative Writing at Princeton University.
MAYDAY! Peace Conference to Focus on Veteran Reintegration
The 35th annual MAYDAY! Peace Conference at Gustavus Adolphus College is titled “The War Within: Can the Soldier Be at Peace?” and will be held Wednesday, April 29. This year’s Conference will feature a morning keynote address by Major Matthew Scherer ’93, an afternoon keynote address by photographer Devin Mitchell (Veteran Vision Project), and three panel discussions focusing on the challenges veterans face upon returning from military service.
Gustavus Announces Reading in Common Selection for 2015-16
Gustavus Adolphus College has selected The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot as its Reading in Common book for the 2015-16 academic year—the 16th year of the program at Gustavus.
