Gustavus Adolphus College has announced the winners of the 2014 Minnesota Campus Compact (MCC) Presidents’ Awards for Civic Engagement. These three awards provide an opportunity for member presidents and chancellors to give statewide recognition to effective leaders in the development of campus-community partnerships.

Laura Leland ’13 majored in biochemistry and molecular biology at Gustavus and spent two summers conducting research with professor Jeff Dahlseid. Today, she is a lab technician at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.

For the second time in the Gustavus Choir’s 82-year history, it has received an invitation to perform at the American Choral Directors Association North Central Division Conference. This concert by the Gustavus Choir, conducted by Dr. Gregory Aune, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, March 21 at St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines, Iowa.

Pre-med students at Gustavus Adolphus College are gaining valuable experience working as medical scribes at various hospitals in the Twin Cities. Students involved in the program have found that their mastery of technical language paired with the patient care they witness up close allows them to secure a competitive advantage over their medical school peers.

Gustavus Adolphus College junior David Lim was recently named the winner of the 12th annual Immanuel Lutheran Church Organ Competition. Lim is a Jussi Björling Music Scholar, member of the Choir of Christ Chapel, and a biology and music double major.

The biennial Gustavus Music Showcase, featuring performances by the Gustavus Choir, the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra, the Gustavus Wind Orchestra and the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band, will be presented at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church (900 Stillwater Avenue) in Mahtomedi on Sunday, March 16.

Sophomore Karin Dye is Principal Viola of the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra, a member of the Gustavus Ringers, violist for the Corda String Quartet, and fiddler in a bluegrass band on campus called Vintage Prairie Dirt. On Tuesday, March 18, Gustavus Adolphus College students and financial aid supporters will travel to St. Paul to meet with state legislators to show continued support and appreciation for the Minnesota State Grant Program.

Tane Danger ’07 founded the LineUs Improv Comedy Troupe at Gustavus and went on to co-found The Theater of Public Policy with fellow alumnus Brandon Boat ’08. More recently, Danger has been named one of 24 Bush Fellows for 2014.
