The Gustavus Adolphus College forensics team placed third out of 51 teams at the prestigious 64th annual L.E. Norton Memorial Tournament on Nov. 5-6 at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill.
The third place showing by the team is the highest finish at the Norton Tournament in the program’s history. Gustavus finished ahead of several nationally ranked programs including Northwestern University, Arizona State University, University of Texas at Austin, and University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The team broke 21 events to outrounds and 13 to finals, while two individuals captured event championships. Senior Chloe Radcliffe won the Open Program Oral Interpretation category and also became the first Gustavus student to win the Individual Events Sweepstakes Award at the tournament by accumulating the most points of any competitor. Radcliffe placed third in Open Informative Speaking, advanced to the semifinals in Open Drama, and was a quarterfinalist in Open Prose.
First-year student Kate Spaulding was the team’s other individual champion as she took first place in the Novice Impromptu Speaking category. Spaulding also achieved a second place finish in Novice Persuasion and a fifth place showing in Novice Informative Speaking.
Junior Chris Moua and Shelby Wilds both placed in the Open Communication Analysis event, as Moua placed third and Wilds took sixth. Senior Sam Hemmerich was a semifinalist in Open Drama and sophomore Justin Feit was a quarterfinalist in Open Prose.
First-year student Courtney Train took second place in Novice Program Oral Interpretation. First-year student Jerica Massey took second place in Novice Prose and added a fifth place showing in Novice Program Oral Interpretation.
First-year student Karin Nordin placed fourth in Novice Prose, while first-year student Carl Cronin took fourth place in Novice Informative Speaking.
First-year student Colleen Caldwell placed fifth in Novice Extemporaneous Speaking and was also a semifinalist in the Novice Impromptu Speaking category.
First-year student Mia Bogdansky took seventh place in the Novice Program Oral Interpretation event, while first-year student Carrie Brobst was a semifinalist in Novice Impromptu Speaking. First-year student Brady Mueller was a semifinalist in both Novice Impromptu and Novice Prose.
