Gustavus Adolphus College will hold its sixth annual Relay for Life event from 7 p.m. Friday, April 17 to 7 a.m. Saturday, April 18 in Lund Center. Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity designed to spread awareness of cancer prevention, celebrate survivorship, and raise money for cancer research.
During the 12-hour overnight event, members of each Relay team will take turns walking laps around the Lund Center’s indoor track. Each team will have at least one member walking on the track at all times. The event will also feature performances by the Gustavus Choir, LineUs Comedy Troupe, the Gustavus Dance Company, the Gustavus Dance Team, and several other student bands and ensembles. In addition, there will be several activities including team relays, a cookie eating contest, and trivia.
In 2008, the Gustavus Relay for Life raised over $54,000 for the American Cancer Society. That ranked first in the Midwest division and fourth in the nation for dollars raised per capita.
“We are one of the leading colleges our size in fundraising and involvement with Relay for Life,” Gustavus senior Catherine Osterhaus said. “We hope to continue that tradition this year.”
Gustavus students and staff can create a new team or join one of the existing 35 teams by going online to relayforlife.org/gustavusadolphus. Donations can also be made through the website or in person during the event. For more information, contact Osterhaus via e-mail at costerha@gustavus.edu.
