A triathlon will be held at Gustavus Adolphus College Saturday, April 25th to benefit juvenile diabetes through Triabetes, a project of Insulindependence.
The triathlon will consist of a 500-yard swim in the Natatorium of the Lund Center for Physical Education and Health, a 12.5 mile bike ride through St. Peter and the surrounding countryside, and a 3.3 mile run through the Gustavus campus and residential areas of St. Peter.
Interested participants should register in advance and can do so by going to gustietri.com. Registration fees for students are $15 for an individual or $35 for a relay team of three. Fees for non-students are $25 for individuals and $60 for a relay team of three. The deadline for online registration is Friday, April 10. Late registrations will be accepted through Sunday, April 19, but there will be no same-day registration.
Participants should note that a certified hard-shell bicycle helmet is required for the bike portion of the race. The race will be timed by Pickle Events using Championchip Technology. For more information about the Gustavus triathlon, contact student Andrew Michelson at gustie-tri@gustavus.edu.
The triathlon is being organized by the Epsilon Pi Alpha fraternity at Gustavus, which has a history of supporting diabetes-related causes. In 2008, the fraternity raised $7,000 to support Insulindependence programs. The fraternity will look to surpass that amount this year during its Diabetes Awareness Week, which will feature several events beginning Sunday, April 19 and concluding with the triathlon Saturday, April 25.
Insulindependence was founded in 2001 by Gustavus alumnus Peter Nerothin. A nonprofit public benefit corporation based in San Diego, Calif., Insulindependence aims to change diabetic lives through adventure travel, educational outreach, and web-based community support. The organization operates through a global network of outdoor enthusiasts working together in an effort to promote healthy, proactive lifestyles to diabetics lacking financial resources, positive role models, and adequate guidance in professional healthcare.
