Singer and songwriter Carrie Newcomer will perform a concert at Gustavus Adolphus College titled “The Geography of Light,” at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16 in Alumni Hall, located on the upper level of the O.J. Johnson Student Union. The concert is free and open to the public.
Newcomer’s music is considered part of the “folk” genre, and her lyrics are about “telling a compelling story in language and music with elegance and clarity.” In addition to singing and writing her own songs, Newcomer plays the guitar, banjo, and bouzouki.
Before her solo debut, Newcomer was part of a folk group called Stone Soup that toured regionally for the better part of the 1980s. Since the release of her first solo album, Visions and Dreams, in 1991, she has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, gaining increased attention after touring with Alison Krauss and Union Station.
She has released 12 solo albums in all, her latest being The Geography of Light, which was released in Feb. 2008. This is a return visit to Gustavus for Newcomer, who also performed at the College in Jan. 2002 and Oct. 2005.
This event is being sponsored by the Gustavus Center for Vocational Reflection. For more information or questions, contact Amy Pehrson at 507-933-7169 or apehrson@gustavus.edu.
