Ellis Jones, emeritus professor of economics and management at Gustavus Adolphus College, was recently presented with the first ever Delta Pi Epsilon National Leadership Medallion Award. The presentation was made at the organization’s 2007 National Research Conference in New Orleans, La.

Delta Pi Epsilon was founded in 1936 and is a national honorary professional graduate society for men and women devoted to the advancement and professionalization of business education.

Jones was cited for his leadership record as the part time Executive Director of the organization from 1966 to 1987. Jones was recognized for establishing the organization’s first national office to handle the logistics of supporting membership, publications, and conference scheduling. During his tenure, membership grew from 40 chapters with 3,500 members to over 90 chapters with more than 9,000 members.

Over the years Jones has received numerous professional awards including the 1983 Distinguished Service Award from the Minnesota Business Educators, Inc., the 1987 Exemplary Service Award from Alpha Chapter, Delta Pi Epsilon, at New York University, and the 1987 Distinguished Service Award from Delta Pi Epsilon.

Following a 40-year (1958-1998) teaching and administrative career at Gustavus, Jones served as the Executive Director for the National Welsh Gymanfa Ganu Association from 1998 to 2003. In 2003 he was presented the North American Welsh Foundation Medallion as Welshman of the Year. Jones is also the founder and coordinator of the college’s annual St. David’s Day celebration — held annually in early March.

Jones and his wife, Janet, reside in St. Peter. They have two children — Karen Wojahn (Windom) and David (Minneapolis) — and three grandchildren.
