During Gustavus Adolphus College's 65th annual Festival of St. Lucia, on Thursday, Dec. 8, Emily Barnard was crowned as St. Lucia with Alicia Blomquist, Barbara Guy, Kathleen LeBlanc, Carlie Mauss, and Lindsay Peak serving as the Lucia Court.
Diwali Festival of Lights, a traditional Hindu celebration, will be observed at Gustavus Adolphus College at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28 in Alumni Hall, in O.J. Johnson Student Union.
Gustavus Adolphus College continues to be a leading institution for the number of students studying abroad, according to an annual ranking recently released by the Institute of International Education (IIE). Reaffirming the mission of giving students an education that is international in perspective, Gustavus was ranked seventh in the "Top 20 Baccalaureate Institutions" list of the institutes's "Open Doors 2005" report.
Today (Nov. 17), the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching released a new classification system for institutions of higher education. The original system, created more than 30 years ago, provided a classification of institutions for the purpose of higher education research. The foundation had previously adjusted the categories several times to reflect changes in education, but this is the most comprehensive revision of the system to date.
From Sunday, Nov. 13 to Wednesday, Nov. 16, Action Supporting All People (ASAP) will coordinate the eighth annual "Sleep Out," an event where students spend four days and three nights simulating the experiences of homeless persons.
Christmas in Christ Chapel services will be held during the weekend of December 2-4. A Gustavus tradition since 1973, it is an opportunity for students, their parents, faculty members, staff, and alumni to gather and celebrate the birth of Christ with music and visual art. This year's service, "Ageless Visions of a Timeless Moment," features music and text that represent some of the ways that the birth of Christ has been depicted from the early Christian communities to today.
The public is invited to attend the annual International Festival at Gustavus Adolphus College beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11 in Alumni Hall of the O.J. Johnson Student Union. Many cultures will be displayed through food, displays, music, dancing, and a fashion show.
Three longtime members of the Gustavus community were honored Monday, Oct. 31 as recipients of the college's annual outstanding administrative and support staff employee awards.
