Gustavus Adolphus College Professor of Music Douglas Nimmo has been inducted into the Society of Prometheans by the School of Fine Arts at the University of Minnesota Duluth. The award honors UMD alumni who have “demonstrated the passion, commitment, and talent to achieve excellence” in their profession and life.

At the awards ceremony, Dr. Nimmo was recognized for a long career of teaching and conducting student musicians around the world, and the excellence of the wind orchestra program at Gustavus. The award citation noted his involvement in the commissioning of new compositions for concert band, his “passion and love for teaching, his enthusiasm for students and his accomplishments as a music educator.”  The citation also noted Gustavus’s recognition of his work as a recipient of the Edgar M. Carlson Award for Distinguished Teaching and his selection for membership in the prestigious American Bandmasters Association.

Dr. Nimmo is in his 25th year as Conductor of the Gustavus Wind Orchestra. Before accepting the call to Gustavus in 1987, Nimmo taught for 13 years in public schools in Montana. He is a 1974 graduate of the University of Minnesota Duluth and earned an M.M.Ed. from Vandercook College of Music and a D.M.A. from Arizona State University.

The Society of Prometheans recognizes accomplished alumni and friends of UMD, who have demonstrated success and passion in their chosen professions and contributed to the success of UMD School of Fine Arts programs. The UMD Society of Prometheans was named after the Greek god, Prometheus, hailed as the protector and benefactor of mankind, who encouraged inventiveness and productivity.
