The men's hockey team celebrated after Eric Bigham scored the game winning goal on Saturday.
The Gustavus Adolphus College and Augsburg College men’s hockey teams took regulation and four overtimes to settle an MIAC Playoff semifinal game at Don Roberts Ice Rink on Saturday night. When it was all said and done, the Gusties prevailed 6-5 and several records were broken.
The game, which lasted 138 minutes and 38 seconds, is the longest game in the history of Division III men’s hockey, surpassing the previous record of 98 minutes and 42 seconds set by Minnesota-Crookston and Milwaukee School of Engineering on Feb. 23, 2002.
It is the second longest game in all of collegiate hockey, falling just two minutes and 57 seconds shy of the all-time record of 141 minutes and 35 seconds set by Yale and Union College (N.Y.) on March 4, 2006.
Gustavus recorded 104 shots on goal and Augsburg goaltender Justin Lochner set an NCAA Division III record for saves in a game with 98.
Gustavus senior forward Eric Bigham scored the game-winning goal at 18:38 of the fourth overtime. Gustavus will now host the MIAC Playoff championship game against St. Thomas at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, March 3.
