Dr. Steve L. Robbins, one of the foremost authorities on diversity, inclusion, and cultural competence, will speak on the first of two Employee Enhancement Days at Gustavus Adolphus College.
Robbins will deliver his presentation, “Unintentional Intolerance: What NICE People Need to Know,” at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5 in Alumni Hall. Robbins coined the term “unintentional intolerance” several years ago and since then has developed engaging presentations and workshops on the topic.
Robbins says that research and experience tell us that we all have biases that we are often unaware of, or think little about. Yet, these biases guide our decision making, behaviors, and attributions on a daily basis. The presentation is intended to leave people with a new understanding of intolerance — one that often leads people to rethink their daily thoughts and actions.
Two other presentations will also be given twice during the day on Feb. 5. Janet DeMars will present “KNEAD Training (Knowledge Needed for Engaging in Alcohol Dialogue)” at 9:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Steve Bennett and Kathi Tunheim will present “Gustavus Leadership Initiative” at 10:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.
A series of presentations are also scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 7. Director of Human Resources Kirk Beyer will present “The History of Gustavus Adolphus College” at 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. A video of the 1998 tornado and its aftermath will be presented at 9:45 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. Finally, “TIAA-CREF Update — Lifecycle Funds and Gustavus Micro Site” will be presented at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. All sessions on both days will be held in Alumni Hall and all members of the Gustavus community are welcome to attend.
