Local residents are invited to join the Gustavus Adolphus College community as legendary Minnesota Public Radio host Cathy Wurzer interviews bestselling author Dr. Robert Waldinger about his book The Good Life: Lessons from the World’s Longest Scientific Study of Happiness. The free conversation takes place at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15 in Björling Recital Hall.
The event is the culmination of The Great Gustie Read, a yearlong program that connects all members of the Gustavus community including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and local residents. The conversation leads up to inauguration of John C. Volin, PhD, as the college’s 18th President on Friday, April 17. Volin, who is finishing his first academic year at Gustavus, chose The Good Life because the book highlights that relationships are the key to leading a life of purpose and meaning. As Volin prepares to finalize Gustavus’s next strategic plan, the themes of lifelong learning, holistic wellbeing, and interdisciplinary liberal arts learning have emerged as key areas of focus that will propel the college forward over the next five years and beyond.
To help share these lessons, discounted books will be available for purchase for $10 at the event and through local retailers including The Book Mark at Gustavus, Nicollet County Historical Society, Generations Boutique, Swedish Kontur, Her Happy Place, and Diamond Dust.
