Gustavus Adolphus College computer science and statistics major Josie Bierbaum ’23 is one of 27 Midwest undergraduates to earn a MinneAnalytics Scholarship, rewarding her dedication to the field of data science and analytics.

“Josie has exceptional interest and experience in data science,” said Melissa Lynn, assistant professor of math, computer science, and statistics. “As a junior, she has already completed two summer internships and engaged in research in data mining, machine learning, and data science.”

“A big part of my scholarship application essay discussed my past internship and the research I had been doing in the spring that has continued into this semester,” said Bierbaum. “I wouldn’t have had these opportunities without Professor Lynn’s help!”

One summer internship was spent at the University of Minnesota through the National Science Foundation’s prestigious Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program, where Bierbaum researched machine learning algorithms. She is currently working with Lynn and Associate Professor of Computer Science Louis Yu on a paper about analytics and computer science.

Outside of her research, Bierbaum has found Gustavus a great place to explore the many extracurricular activities on campus. “Several professors have sent out opportunities for leadership positions or clubs that I wasn’t aware of and offered help to students interested in applying.”

After Gustavus, Bierbaum plans on pursuing a master’s degree in computer science and starting a career in healthcare or technology, in the hopes of leaving “a positive impact on the world we live in.”

In the meantime, the Gustavus community has already left a positive impact on Bierbaum as she gains experiences which will be foundational to her career.

“In my experience, Gusties look out for each other, and that has helped me find so many opportunities that paved the way for helping me obtain this scholarship.”
