Heroic Productions Wins Hermes Gold Award for Christmas in Christ Chapel Broadcast

The award recognizes the outstanding work of the creative professionals at Heroic Productions and the students of Gustavus Adolphus College.

Heroic Productions has been named a Hermes Creative Awards Gold Winner for the 2016 live web-stream of Gustavus Adolphus College’s Christmas in Christ Chapel worship service.

“We’re honored to receive this award as a recognition of our good work in partnership with Gustavus,” Heroic Productions President and CEO Jon Young ’77 said. “Our team at Heroic loves Christmas in Christ Chapel because it’s a wonderful event in an iconic location.”

The award is in the “Streaming Video” category of the Hermes Creative Awards, an international competition that recognizes the outstanding work of creative professionals involved in the concept, writing, and design of traditional and emerging media.

Entries for the awards come from professionals around the world, from small businesses all the way to Fortune 500 companies. Judges are industry professionals who look for companies and individuals whose talent exceeds a high standard of excellence and whose work serves as a benchmark for the industry.

Mike Challeen ’82 was never involved in Christmas in Christ Chapel when he was a Gustavus student, but now he serves as the score reader for the directors of the annual live stream.

Heroic Productions won a 2017 Hermes Gold Award for the Christmas in Christ Chapel live stream.

“I always tell the students not to take it for granted because what they’re doing here is really special,” said Challeen, who also serves as the communications director at Heroic Productions. “I’m glad that their incredible work has been recognized with this award.”

Heroic Productions’ involvement in Christmas in Christ Chapel began several years ago, when Matt Dobosenski ’99, the College’s assistant director of institutional events and event technical services, reached out to Young about the possibility of renting some lighting for the annual services.

As the partnership blossomed, Heroic Productions began providing lighting designers and operating engineers for the services before eventually producing the College’s first-ever live stream of Christmas in Christ Chapel in 2014. From there, the production has continued to grow, connecting the annual service with thousands of views from across the country and around the world.

“The service is well-produced and looks beautiful on the live stream because Christmas in Christ Chapel is such an outstanding product,” said Young, who also serves alongside his wife, Anita ’77, as co-chair of the College’s Friends of Music National Advisory Board. “The students really make the performance come alive and it’s rewarding to see the entire team honored with the Hermes Award.”
