At 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 588 seniors will receive their bachelor of arts degrees from Gustavus Adolphus College during commencement exercises at Hollingsworth Field. In the case of inclement weather, the ceremonies will be moved indoors to Lund Center for Physical Education and Health.
For those unable to attend this year’s commencement, the ceremony will be webcast live at gustavus.edu/events/commencement/video.php. This will be the first commencement ceremony held at the new Hollingsworth Field. Graduates will receive their diplomas from the faculty chair in their respective majors, a tradition that began in 1973.
Three honorary degrees will also be conferred during the ceremony to David Ravinder Selvaraj and Drell and Adeline Bernhardson. Selvaraj is the founding member and director of Vishtar, which serves as the home institution for Gustavus’s joint study-abroad program in India with Concordia College-Moorhead. Selvaraj has developed and organized a semester-long Social Justice, Peace, and Development program that has made Vishtar one of the finest study-abroad programs in American higher education.
The Bernhardson’s established the first fully funded endowed chair in Lutheran Studies at Gustavus in 1996. They also endow a fund that has provided more than 900 scholarship awards since the 1993-94 academic year. They are parents of four Gustavus graduates and received the Greater Gustavus Award in 1997.
