Forensics Team Wins at SDSU Posted on October 10th, 2011 by

The Gustavus Adolphus College forensics team won the team sweepstakes at the Jackrabbit Jousts, hosted by South Dakota State University on Oct. 7-8.

Gustavus finished with 293 points, which put the team well ahead of second place Concordia Moorhead which recorded 192 points. Minnesota State University, Mankato (178), Ohio University (165) and Miami University, Ohio (134) rounded out the top five. Twenty teams participated in the tournament, including five programs ranked in the top 20 nationally.

Gustavus senior Sam Hemmerich earned first place honors in two events, including Informative Speaking and Dramatic Interpretation. Hemmerich also combined with sophomore Adam Boucherab to take third place in Duo Interpretation.

Junior Hannah Engel also won an individual event championship by taking first place in Persuasive Speaking.

First year Jason Dennis took second place in Dramatic Interpretation, while first year Kate Spaulding placed fourth in Persuasive Speaking. First year Courtney Train took fourth place in After Dinner Speaking, sophomore Mariecus Jarvis took fifth place in Poetry Interpretation, and junior Chris Moua recorded a fifth place finish in Communication Analysis.

Senior Allegra Birdseye and sophomore Shelby Wilds also contributed by making it to the semifinals in Impromptu Speaking.
