Gustavus men's tennis player Tyler Johnson looks to return a forehand in a match last weekend.

The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s tennis team defeated St. Thomas 7-2 and Bethel 9-0 on Saturday, April 24 to clinch at least a share of the MIAC regular season championship. It is the 22nd consecutive MIAC regular season title for the team, and the first for first-year head coach Tommy Valentini.

With the two conference victories, the Gusties improved to 8-0 in MIAC play and can win the conference championship outright with a victory over St. Olaf on Saturday, May 1.

Against St. Thomas, the Gusties handed the Tommies their first conference loss of the year by winning two-of-three doubles matches and five-of-six singles matches. In doubles play, Amrik Donkena and Tyler Johnson beat Brendan O’Connell and Dan Cooper 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Krishan Jethwa and Rodrigo Otera topped Mitch Blackey and Matt Bergstrom 8-4 at No. 3 doubles. In singles play, Donkena (No. 1), Johnson (No. 2), Daniel Pomeranc (No. 4), Jethwa (No. 5), and Kyle Olson (No. 6) all picked up victories.

Against Bethel, Gustavus claimed an early lead with three convincing wins in the double matches, and then closed out the match by winning all six singles matches.
