Video: Derek Walcott at Gustavus

On Monday, Sept. 27, Nobel laureate Derek Walcott read from several of his poems and Gustavus Adolphus College conferred an honorary degree upon him. Walcott is in the middle of a three-week residency at the College as part of the Rydell Professorship program.

Forensics Team Starts Strong

The Gustavus Adolphus College forensics team opened its 2010-11 season with a strong showing at the first and second Mid-American Forensics League (MAFL) Tournaments on Sept. 25-26 in Illinois.

Walcott Poetry Reading Sept. 27

Derek Walcott, the 1992 Nobel Prize winner in Literature, will read from several of his poems at 8 p.m. tonight, Monday, Sept. 27, in Jussi Björling Recital Hall at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Six Trustees Pledge Five Million to Endow Faculty Positions

At a gala dinner for friends of the College on Sept. 23, Gustavus Adolphus College President Jack R. Ohle announced that six members of the College’s Board of Trustees have committed to contribute a combined total of $5 million to the College’s endowment.

Highways 169 and 99 Re-open

All roads into and out of St. Peter and routes leading to Gustavus are now open, including U.S. Highway 169 (from Le Sueur to St. Peter) and Minnesota Highway 99 east. These roads and others were recently closed due to recent flooding of the Minnesota River.

Dr. Mahzarin Banaji to Give John Kendall Lecture Series Address

Dr. Mahzarin Banaji, the Richard Clarke Cabot Professor of Social Ethics at Harvard University’s Department of Psychology, will present the 2010 John Kendall Lecture Series Address at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14 in Wallenberg Auditorium.

William Kent Krueger to Headline Fall Author Day

William Kent Krueger, author of the New York Times best-seller Vermilion Drift will speak at the Gustavus Library Associates’ Fall Author Day Tuesday, Oct. 12 at the Edina Country Club.

Obituary: Ruth Dannehl, 92, Professor Emeritus of Nursing

Ruth Proft Dannehl, professor emeritus of nursing at Gustavus Adolphus College, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at the age of 92.

Historian Kevin Mumford to Speak at Gustavus

Kevin Mumford, a professor in the University of Iowa’s Department of History and African-American Studies, will give a free public lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11 at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Comedian Scott Novotny to Perform Saturday

Scott Novotny, the national comedian most frequently referred to as the new Robin Williams, will return to Gustavus as part of the College’s Homecoming Week festivities. Novotny will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25 in the Björling Recital Hall.
