Gustavus Announces Six More Tenure-Track Faculty Hires Posted on May 26th, 2010 by

Gustavus Adolphus College is pleased to announce the hiring of six new tenure-track faculty members who will begin their teaching duties at the onset of the 2010-11 academic year. Earlier this spring, the College announced the hiring of five additional tenure-track faculty members, bringing the total number of new tenure-track faculty hires to 11 for the 2010-11 academic year.

Valerie Struthers Walker will join the Department of Education. Struthers Walker has previously served as a course instructor and assistant professor at Michigan State University. She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Colorado College and a Ph.D. from Michigan State University.

Kent Kalm will join the Department of Health and Exercise Science. Kalm has served as a visiting professor at Gustavus since 2007 and as an associate professor in the Human Performance Department at Minnesota State University, Mankato since 1980. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Mankato State College, a master’s degree from St. Cloud State University, and a doctor of education degree from the University of Utah.

K. Angelique Dwyer will join the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. Dwyer most recently served as a teaching assistant at the University of Iowa. She holds a master’s and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.

Lauren N. Hecht will join the Department of Psychology. Hecht has previously served as an instructor at both Grinnell College and the University of Iowa. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Albion College and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.

J. Blake Couey will join the Department of Religion. Couey has served as a visiting assistant professor at both Gustavus and Millsaps College during the past two years. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Mercer University, and both a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary.

Melissa Rolnick will join the Department of Theatre and Dance. Rolnick has served as a dance and yoga instructor at various studios for more than 30 years. She has served as a visiting instructor at Gustavus since 2007. Rolnick holds a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York College at Purchase and a master of fine arts degree from Mills College.

Previous tenure-track faculty hires for the 2010-11 academic year included Kristian F. Braekkan (Economics and Management), Asli Ilgit (Political Science), Ruth Lu Lin (Music), Stephen Miller (Chemistry), and Kjerstin Moody (Scandinavian Studies).
